August 2019 – Mass Street Staff Picks

Josh BaldridgeCollings Guitars – 2007 CW Brazilian Adirondack Varnish – Used
With the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival right around the corner, I couldn’t think of a more appropriate instrument for this month than this 2007 CW (Collings Winfield). The premium varnish finish gives this dread an aged aesthetic, and the tone wood choices deliver with that adi/brazilian combo.

Jim Baggett – Martin Guitars – 1941 D-18
Robert Bowlin has picked this as one of his favorite guitars during his last two visits to the shop. Who can argue with the tone master? (This D-18 it’s up and on the website yet, but get in touch if you’re interested.)

Eric PutnamChase Bliss Audio – Tonal Recall Analog Delay
Great sounding analog delay! I have been using it as my main delay pedal for a couple of years. With the Fave switch I have enough presets to have a few different delay sounds, and it can even handle some modulation sounds. It knocked three pedals off my board!

Matt Pelsma – Milkman Amps – F-Stop Tremolo Reverb Pedal
The F-Stop is an excellent amp sounding reverb and trem unit in one. It sounds very realistic and pleasing and matches excellent with any amp… Might be a Flint-killer!

Mike Horan – Collings Guitars – 01 Traditional T Series Baked – Sunburst
I really like the big open sound of this guitar. Though slightly smaller, this particular model delivers a very direct fundamental tone that is music to my ears.

Trey DurkinBacon & Day Banjo – 1922 Silver Bell Serenader Tenor
This is such a cool banjo! It is very well made, and with magnificent appointments that really showcase the banjo designs of the roaring ’20s. It has a great sound and the original rogers head is in excellent condition. To top it all off it comes with a super cool and well made original hard case. Tuned in fifths, it is great for a mandolin player looking for an instrument with a different voice.

Susan Willits – Gibson Mandolins – 1914 F4 – Used
One of the many good things about working at Mass Street Music is the variety of instruments we get to see, old and new. Every once in a while we get to have some really old instruments and we currently have a wonderful 1914 Gibson F4 mandolin in the store. Lovely inlay on the peg head and tuner buttons. This F4 is in great shape, plays well and has recently been re-fretted. It still has a lot of life left in it even though it’s over 100 years old!!

Matt KappenmanCollings Guitars – D1 Traditional T Series Custom Sunburst
Winfield is right around the corner and this D1 is not only extremely responsive and sounds great, but is sure to turn some heads when you sit down for a jam. The custom sunburst was something we worked on with Collings, referencing it off a few of Jim’s vintage Martins. Every time I walk through his office I second guess whether this D1 is a new or a vintage guitar. Not to mention the fact that it’s spec’ed out with the traditional package. A flat-picking canon that’s ready for more than a few rounds of Blackberry Blossom.
