July 2026 Staff Picks

Jim Baggett – Collings Guitars – D1 A HC – Hill Country – Sunburst – Satin Finish
Hands down favorite of a couple of pro players that came through KC last month.

Eric Mardis – Ernie Ball Music Man Guitars – JP15 Amber Waves Flame – Figured Roasted Maple/Maple
I bought my JP-6 in 2006 and it has been my go-to stunt guitar ever since. This JP-15 is the latest step in the evolution of the Petrucci model. It still has the same amazing build quality and high performance specs, but the body shape and pick-ups have changed (as well as the addition of the eye-popping flamed maple top!) The real secret to these is the piezo bridge. Mix this piezo acoustic sound through an acoustic rig and BLEND that with your heavy/effected tone and you’ve arrived in sonic Valhalla. Watch for a future video on this set up!

Marnie Orville – J. Romero Banjos – 2002 Open Back #9 Birdseye Maple – Used
This is rather unique open-back from the early 2000s. With a maple tone ring and metal coordinator rod, it has a brilliant yet warm response and projection. I really enjoy a wide nut and deep neck that makes it so fun to play.

Clark Russell – Gibson Electric Guitars – 1975 Les Paul Deluxe – Gold Top – Used
There’s not much to say about this ’75 Les Paul deluxe that isn’t already staring you in the face: gorgeous looks, incredible condition, mini humbuckers—all just delightful. One major detail is that our manager, Mike Horan, performed an astounding Mass Street Refret and PLEK job, leaving it as one of the most comfortable and playable guitars you’ll ever pick up. It’s a guitar you just have to see and hold for yourself. For you online buyers, this is one of those extraordinary guitars that I’m sure you’ll be satisfied with sight unseen.

Matt Harmon – Surfy Industries – SurfyBear Reverb – Classic Tank V3.0 w/ SurfyPan Extra – Black
As a certified reverb-o-holic, the original Fender 6G15 is my GOAT reverb. The vintage units are expensive and can be a roll of the dice on functionality and originality. Luckily for all of us Surfy Industries took the original schematics and made a 1-1 circuit path replica. They modernized it by swapping the tubes for JFET’s. If you need the surf boing and drip – this is the way to go and even if you don’t having this at the front of your amp is one of the best spring reverbs ever.

Susan Willits – ODE Banjos – Magician – 12″ Open Back Banjo – Wooden Armrest
The Ode 12″ Magician has a full, robust low end with a clear midrange, making for a rich, warm sound. The neck feels great and is already spiked at 7 and 9 and is ready to play in multiple keys. Built near Boulder, Colorado, this is a lovely banjo featuring a multi-ply maple tone rim and aged brass hardware along with a comfy armrest.

Matt KappenmanBruce Guitars – 0-17 Special – Honduran Mahogany – Vintage White
This single-0 from Micah Bruce is one of my favorite small-body guitars in the shop. All mahogany body with one of the most whimsical and fun finishes I’ve seen in years. If you’re looking for a great small-builder single-0 to enjoy I can’t say enough great things about this guitar.
