Collings D1 VN

July 2023 – Mass Street Staff Picks

Kyle RalstonTom Anderson Electric Guitars – Icon Classic – Mellow Yellow – Distress Level 1
I thought of Hubert Sumlin’s guitar on the cover of one of his albums (Healing Feeling), had a brief discussion with Roy at Tom Anderson Guitar Works, and Shazam!!…..we now have one of the coolest electric guitars in the store!!! The SC1- neck and bridge pickups are very musical and vintage sounding. A hotter SC2 in the bridge position is just enough when you need that extra push. It’s sonically well balanced, practical, and a level 1 aged nitro finish will have you playing and growing with this instrument for years to come.

Brian Soden – Suhr Guitars – Classic T Antique – 2 Tone Tobacco Burst
This new Suhr has been tugging at my heart strings since its arrival. My wife even knows about this guitar and how much I dig it. Ha! This one has everything I look for in a killer T-style guitar. Lightweight, resonant, snappy…and the one-piece Ash body has a unique woodgrain pattern to it. Love it. All of it!

Mike Horan – Collings Acoustic Guitars – D1 VN
This is it. This is the model that first hooked me on Collings guitars. I bought one of these from Mass Street Music back in 1994, shortly before I started working here. I didn’t even own a car at the time and I was willing to continue going without one in order to play such a FINE instrument. All those Greyhough bus trips were totally worth it. This Collings mahogany dreadnought may be the perfect guitar. All the resonance, volume, clarity and balance you could ever want in an instrument.

Matt Harmon – BOSS Effect Effects – TU-3S Chromatic Tuner
I’ve been using a switcher lately that has a dedicated tuner out and having the smaller version of the Tu3 has been a great space saving design on my pedalboard.

Susan Willits – Eastman Mandolins – MDO605 – Goldburst – Octave Mandolin
Wow, the Eastman MDO605 is incredible! Loads of low end and just as much sustain! I finally had a chance to play this instrument and had a hard time putting it down. A beautiful instrument, with solid wood construction and a lovely gold burst finish, this octave mandolin also comes with a K&K pickup, so it’s ready for the stage. If you’re looking for a large sound, with a lot of low end, this definitely has you covered!

Matt KappenmanSanta Cruz Guitars – 2021 1934-D – Brazilian Rosewood – Adirondack Spruce – Used
This is a modern Brazilian Rosewood guitars that doesn’t disappoint. A big, rich, even sound across the fingerboard makes this vintage-inspired dreadnought a joy to play. I had to case it up and put it away just so I could get some work done!
